Description
A simple recipe for making low-fat dry food mix for dogs using ground turkey and zucchini.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb ground turkey, lean
- 2 cups shredded zucchini
- 1 cup cooked brown rice
- 1/2 cup rolled oats
- 2 large eggs
- 1/4 cup water
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C). Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, combine the ground turkey, shredded zucchini, cooked brown rice, rolled oats, eggs, and water. Mix until just combined. Do not overmix.
- Spread the mixture thinly and evenly onto the prepared baking sheet. Aim for a thickness of about 1/4 inch.
- Bake for 45 to 60 minutes, or until the mixture is firm and dry to the touch.
- Remove from the oven and let it cool completely on the baking sheet.
- Once cool, break the mixture into small, kibble-sized pieces. You can use a knife or pulse briefly in a food processor for uniform size.
- Store the dried kibble mix in an airtight container in a cool, dry place.
Notes
- This recipe makes a soft, baked base that you dry out. For longer storage, you may need to dry it further in a dehydrator or a very low oven setting (around 200°F or 93°C) for several hours until very hard.
- Adjust the water content slightly if the mix seems too dry or too wet before baking.
- You can substitute brown rice with cooked quinoa for a different grain option.
