Description

A recipe for making dry, crunchy dog food kibble at home using turkey and sweet peas.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground turkey
  • 1 cup sweet peas, frozen or fresh
  • 1/2 cup oat flour
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil
  • 1 teaspoon ground flaxseed
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried parsley

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the ground turkey, sweet peas, oat flour, water, coconut oil, flaxseed, and parsley. Mix until just combined. Do not overmix.
  3. Spread the mixture thinly and evenly onto the prepared baking sheets. Aim for a thickness of about 1/8 to 1/4 inch.
  4. Bake for 30 minutes.
  5. Remove from the oven and carefully break the mixture into small, irregular pieces while still warm.
  6. Return the pieces to the oven and bake for another 30 to 45 minutes, or until the kibble is completely dry and crunchy throughout. Check frequently to prevent burning.
  7. Turn off the oven and let the kibble cool completely inside the oven with the door slightly ajar for at least 1 hour to fully dry out.
  8. Store the cooled kibble in an airtight container.

Notes

  • Adjust the baking time based on the thickness of your kibble pieces. They must be fully dry to prevent spoilage.
  • You can substitute sweet peas with other dog-safe vegetables like carrots or green beans.
  • This recipe yields a small batch; scale ingredients up for larger needs.
