Description
A recipe for making dry, crunchy dog food kibble at home using turkey and sweet peas.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb ground turkey
- 1 cup sweet peas, frozen or fresh
- 1/2 cup oat flour
- 1/4 cup water
- 1 tablespoon coconut oil
- 1 teaspoon ground flaxseed
- 1/2 teaspoon dried parsley
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, combine the ground turkey, sweet peas, oat flour, water, coconut oil, flaxseed, and parsley. Mix until just combined. Do not overmix.
- Spread the mixture thinly and evenly onto the prepared baking sheets. Aim for a thickness of about 1/8 to 1/4 inch.
- Bake for 30 minutes.
- Remove from the oven and carefully break the mixture into small, irregular pieces while still warm.
- Return the pieces to the oven and bake for another 30 to 45 minutes, or until the kibble is completely dry and crunchy throughout. Check frequently to prevent burning.
- Turn off the oven and let the kibble cool completely inside the oven with the door slightly ajar for at least 1 hour to fully dry out.
- Store the cooled kibble in an airtight container.
Notes
- Adjust the baking time based on the thickness of your kibble pieces. They must be fully dry to prevent spoilage.
- You can substitute sweet peas with other dog-safe vegetables like carrots or green beans.
- This recipe yields a small batch; scale ingredients up for larger needs.
