Description
A simple recipe for making dry pet food kibble at home using turkey and kale.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb ground turkey
- 2 cups kale, finely chopped
- 1 cup rolled oats
- 1/2 cup flaxseed meal
- 2 eggs
- 1/4 cup water
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, combine the ground turkey, chopped kale, rolled oats, flaxseed meal, eggs, and water. Mix until just combined. Do not overmix.
- Spread the mixture thinly and evenly onto the prepared baking sheets. Aim for a thickness of about 1/4 inch.
- Bake for 45 minutes.
- Remove from the oven and carefully break the mixture into small, irregular pieces while still warm.
- Return the pieces to the oven and bake for another 30 to 45 minutes, or until completely dry and hard.
- Turn off the oven and allow the kibble to cool completely inside the oven with the door slightly ajar for at least 1 hour to ensure maximum dryness.
- Store in an airtight container.
Notes
- You can adjust the water slightly if the mixture seems too dry or too wet to spread.
- The final baking time depends on your oven and desired crispness. The kibble must be very dry to prevent spoilage.
- This recipe makes a batch of mixed pieces; you can use a small cookie cutter to make uniform shapes if you prefer.
