Description

A simple recipe for making dry pet food kibble at home using turkey and kale.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground turkey
  • 2 cups kale, finely chopped
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup flaxseed meal
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/4 cup water

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the ground turkey, chopped kale, rolled oats, flaxseed meal, eggs, and water. Mix until just combined. Do not overmix.
  3. Spread the mixture thinly and evenly onto the prepared baking sheets. Aim for a thickness of about 1/4 inch.
  4. Bake for 45 minutes.
  5. Remove from the oven and carefully break the mixture into small, irregular pieces while still warm.
  6. Return the pieces to the oven and bake for another 30 to 45 minutes, or until completely dry and hard.
  7. Turn off the oven and allow the kibble to cool completely inside the oven with the door slightly ajar for at least 1 hour to ensure maximum dryness.
  8. Store in an airtight container.

Notes

  • You can adjust the water slightly if the mixture seems too dry or too wet to spread.
  • The final baking time depends on your oven and desired crispness. The kibble must be very dry to prevent spoilage.
  • This recipe makes a batch of mixed pieces; you can use a small cookie cutter to make uniform shapes if you prefer.
