Description

Simple recipe for making nutritious, protein-rich dry dog food kibbles at home using chicken and chickpeas.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground chicken
  • 1 cup cooked chickpeas, mashed
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the ground chicken, mashed chickpeas, rolled oats, water, coconut oil, and dried parsley. Mix until fully incorporated.
  3. Spread the mixture thinly and evenly onto the prepared baking sheet. Aim for about 1/4 inch thickness.
  4. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the mixture is firm and cooked through.
  5. Remove from the oven and let it cool completely on the sheet.
  6. Once cool, break or cut the sheet into small, bite-sized kibble shapes.
  7. For a crunchier texture, return the pieces to a very low oven (200°F or 95°C) for an additional 30 minutes, turning halfway through.
  8. Store the finished kibbles in an airtight container.

Notes

  • Adjust water content if the mix seems too dry or too wet before baking.
  • You can substitute ground turkey for chicken if desired.
  • These homemade kibbles should be stored in the refrigerator for up to one week or frozen for longer storage.
