Description

A recipe for making balanced, dry dog food using ground beef and rolled oats.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups rolled oats
  • 1 pound ground beef (90% lean recommended)
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup cooked carrots, mashed
  • 1/4 cup flaxseed meal
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried parsley

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175 degrees Celsius). Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the rolled oats, ground beef, water, mashed carrots, flaxseed meal, eggs, salt, and parsley. Mix until all ingredients are evenly incorporated.
  3. Spread the mixture thinly and evenly onto the prepared baking sheet. Aim for a thickness of about 1/4 inch.
  4. Bake for 30 minutes.
  5. Remove the sheet from the oven and carefully score the mixture into small, uniform kibble-sized pieces using a pizza cutter or sharp knife while it is still warm. Do not separate the pieces yet.
  6. Return the sheet to the oven and bake for an additional 20 to 30 minutes, or until the mixture is completely dry and hard. Check frequently to prevent burning.
  7. Turn off the oven and leave the kibble inside with the door slightly ajar for 1 hour to cool and dry further.
  8. Once completely cool, break the mixture along the scored lines into individual kibble pieces. Store in an airtight container.

Notes

  • Adjust baking time based on your oven and the thickness of the mixture to achieve a hard, dry consistency suitable for kibble.
  • You can substitute ground turkey or chicken for the ground beef.
  • Store the finished kibble in a cool, dry place. For longer storage, consider freezing portions.
